Student written, directed Buddha the Musical aims for Illinois Theatre Festival
Senior Paul Twaroski has stepped off the stage and has taken a seat in the director’s chair for the production of his play Buddha the Musical. The musical is an urban/hip-hop retelling of the life of Buddha, who founded Buddhism.
“As the director, I get to see the coming together of the show and essentially the bringing to life of the story I wrote, which has been an incredible experience,” said Twaroski.
The showcase features an ensemble cast comprising senior leads. Rehearsals for the musical have taken place during drama classes with only two after school practices so far.
Twaroski’s primary goal for the show is for it to be selected to perform at the Illinois Theatre Festival this January. Three judges from ITF will attend Saturday’s performance to evaluate and decide whether or not the show will make it into the festival.
To promote the first-ever, student directed production, cast members rapped a song during morning announcements this week and sported their purple Buddha t-shirts.
Performances are Friday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Lakes theatre. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the door or in advance during lunch periods.
