National 'Physics First' movement hits D-117
The school board approved a proposal Sept. 20 to adopt a national movement that would change the sequence of major science courses at LCHS and ACHS as early as next year.
The initiative, known as "Physics First", means that freshman students would take physics followed by chemistry their sophomore year and biology their junior year. This is flip-flopped from how the courses have been laid out for students in many school districts for the past several years.
Internationally renowned physicist Dr. Leon M. Lederman, who boasts a litany of titles and awards for his work in the field of high energy physics, met with science teachers and school board members from across Lake County prior to the board meeting to promote the philosophy of such a switch and share how other schools have experienced success.

According to the American Association of Physics Teachers web site, "Physics First" would "lay the foundation for more advanced high school courses in chemistry, biology or physics" and is "an important and useful way to bring physics to a significantly larger number of students than has been customary." |
