The LCHS gymnasium soon will boast its first banner, after the varsity volleyball team earned the first major athletic award in the school’s young history. Coach Carla Thompson and her team accepted the Zebras of Northern Illinois Officials Association Sportsmanship Banner on Dec. 1. This is the first year of the banner's existence.
Presented to the team by Nancy Nester, an Illinois High School Association official, this top award is designed to honor the coach, players, and fans who best “demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship during the 2005-2006 season,” according to the plaque the Eagles received. LCHS was one of 169 schools considered for the award, voted upon by ZONI officials. All volleyball levels, freshman through varsity, are eligible. Other schools that displayed good sportsmanship received certificates.
Thompson, who has coached volleyball for 15 years, commended the players, their parents, and the fans for staying positive despite a 2-24 season record.
“[The award] says a lot about the kids. They always came ready to learn,” she said. |
