CALCULATORS

It is strongly recommended that all LCHS math students have their own calculator for use during math class. Students in Algebra 1A, Algebra 1B, Algebra 1, Geometry Fundamentals, and Geometry need a scientific calculator with a fraction key. The TI - 30 XIIS would be satisfactory. Students enrolled in any Honors class, AP class, as well as Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus or Statistics/Probability should have a graphing calculator -- the TI-84 Plus is the best choice. These two calculators are acceptable to use on the ACT exam. The following types of calculators are prohibited on the ACT:

  • calculators with built-in computer algebra systems
  • Prohibited calculators in this category include:
  • Texas Instruments: All model numbers that begin with TI-89 or TI-92 and the TI-Nspire CAS—Note: The TI-Nspire (non-CAS) is permitted.
  • Hewlett-Packard: HP 48GII and all model numbers that begin with HP 40G, HP 49G, or HP 50G
  • Casio: Algebra fx 2.0, ClassPad 300 and ClassPad 330, and all model numbers that begin with CFX-9970G

Using the TI-89 is the most common reason students are dismissed from the ACT for prohibited calculator use.

Camelia Ivan

I was born and raised in Transylvania, Romania. That’s right, it really exists!  During 1968 my parents and I moved to the capital of Romania, Bucharest, where I graduated from Mathematics & Physics High School. Later, I attended the University of Bucharest and received Bachelor’s of Science degrees in mathematics and mechanical engineering.  After teaching math for a few years in Romania I married my high school sweetheart, had twin daughters, and lived through the revolutionary times of 1989. The Revolution of 1989 greatly altered the balance of power in the world and marked the end of the Cold War.  My family moved to the United States three years after the subsequent events of 1989. Here I attended National-Louis University, IL and received a Master’s Degree in Education in 2003. During the past three years at LCHS I have taught AP Calculus AB and BC, Algebra I, Algebra II, and Algebra II Honors. This past summer I joined the thousands of dog-loving-Americans and now have my very own Siberian Husky puppy.

Carolyn Barry

I am an honors graduate of Antioch Community High School. After high school I attended Augustana College and obtained a Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Accounting and enjoyed a semester abroad in Europe.   I went on to earn my CPA and Master of Science and Tax Degree (DePaul University) and worked for several years at Deloitte and Touche in Chicago in their tax department, consulting with and preparing the tax returns for many of Chicago's largest corporations.  One of my clients was so well off that she had used a check for $1,000,000 as a book marker and had to be reminded 6 months later to deposit the check.  While working at Deloitte & Touche, I began volunteering with the Junior Achievement Program.  I quickly saw the reward and fulfillment of working with our youth and I realized that I was born to teach. I went back to school and obtained my Masters of Arts in Mathematics Education. I then proudly took the job at ACHS where I coached tennis for 8 years.  I have also coached the math team, organized the annual math fair, served as a representative on the Board of Directors, been a faculty advisor for NHS, and was on the Advisory Planning Committee.  Two years ago I got married and this summer we got two new cockapoo puppies named Mocha and Payton.

Melissa Cross

I grew up in Hoffman Estates, IL and earned my Bachelor’s Social Work from Winona State University.  I continued my education at National Louis University where I earned my Master’s of Arts Teaching Special Education.  I have worked in District 117 for the past six years.  Along with teaching, I am also the Sophomore Class Sponsor and the Varsity Girls Bowling Coach.  As for sports, I am a huge Chicago Fan ~ Cubs, Bears and Blackhawks.  I enjoy reading and taking my St. Bernard Wrigley on walks.
